Location of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust(JNPT)
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust(JNPT) Is located on the Arabian Sea in the Raigad district of Navi Mumbai and is today set to be India’s largest container port. Moreover, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust is started on 26 May 1989. The main purpose of its construction was to make a container cargo hub by decongesting the already existing Mumbai port. Mumbai port is one of the oldest ports in India. Due to changing cargo volumes, it was quite difficult to handle in Mumbai port. The need for Newport Rises due to the shallowness of the Port, Railway congestion & labor problems. That’s why Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust started.
Why is the JNPT Port called Nhava Sheva Port?
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust(JNPT) port was used as a satellite port of Mumbai port. But, the Major ports trust act 1963 was passed under which JNPT port was made an autonomous body. The government of India builds the JNPT port on 2584 hectares of land with INR 1109 cr. Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust lies near Nhava and Sheva village, that’s why it is called “Nhava Sheva Port”. Besides being the number one container port in India, JNPT has such a huge operational capacity that it is also the 35th major container port in the world.
Organization Structure of JNPT
JNPT is managed by a Board of trustees consisting of multiple stakeholders. Moreover, on the board of trustees, the chairman, Deputy Chairman, and 17 other people are appointed from time to time by the central government. There are 5 departments in JNPT named operations, port planning & development, finance, marine, and administration.

Jawaharlal Nehru port container terminal(JNPCT)
It is the first terminal of JNPT formed on 26th May 1989 with a capacity of 1.5MM TEUs(Twenty Foot Equality Unit). Further, it has 62 hectares of land for container yards. JNPCT has a quay length of 680 meters where ships are docked. Moreover, it has one more quay of 445m long which is capable of handling a 10m draft and has the capacity to handle a total of 0.15 MM TEUs.
Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal(NSICT-DP World)
Due to an increase in demand for container trade operations, this terminal was developed in 1999. Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal is India’s first private terminal. It is managed by the Australian company P&O Ports under the BOT model. But, in 2006 P&O Ports was acquired by the Dubai government-owned DP World. So, NSICT Terminal is now run by DP World. This Terminal has 25.84 hectares of land for container yards. Moreover, it has a capacity of 1.2 MM TEUs per year.
BPCL and IOC Liquid Terminal
Under the BOP agreement, BPCL and IOC Liquid Terminal were constructed by BPCL and IOCL in 1999. Moreover, it is also called “Twin-berth Cargo Jetty”. This terminal handle liquid and gaseous forms containing cargo like Crude oil, Oil products, LNG, and LPG. That’s why it is called a liquid terminal. It has the capacity to handle 6 million metric tons per annum.
Gateway Terminals India(GTI-APM)
The Terminal was built by APM terminal and Container Corporation of India(CONCOR) on 30 year lease period based BOT model in 2006. APM terminals is a Netherlands Based port operating company. Moreover, it provides services and integrated cargo. CONCOR provides transport linkages between the ports and the hinterlands. It has 54.57 hectares of container yard and a capacity of 1.8MM TEUs.
Nhava Sheva(INDIA) Gateway Terminal Pvt. Ltd.
DP World proposed to build another 330-meter quay-length terminal to further improve the relationship with Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust. Increasing India’s growing infrastructure need and enhancing the private sector participation, having a partner like DP World is a privilege. Thus, in 2016, Nhava Sheva(INDIA) Gateway Terminal Pvt. Ltd. was commissioned. This terminal has a capacity of 0.8MM TEUs per year and can handle 15-meter draft vessels.
Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal(BMCT)
Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal was constructed by Bharat Mumbai container terminals Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of the port of Singapore authorities under the DBFOT(Design, Built, Fund, Operate, and Transfer) model. The total budget to develop this terminal is INR 7915 Cr. Moreover, the quay length is 2km, and the capacity of 4.8 MM TEUs. This terminal was commissioned in 2018.
Imports and Exports of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust(JNPT)

Mostly, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) handles cargo traffic in industrial areas of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka. In Fiscal Year 2020-21, only 6% overall downfall happened due to covid-19.

Ongoing Projects on Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust(JNPT)
Bharat Mumbai container terminal’s capacity is being increased from 1 km potion vessel depth handling to 16.5 and 12 quay cranes will be added. Moreover, 46 RTG(Rubber Tyred Gantry) & 4 RMGC(Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes ) will be added to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). The main aim is to increase the capacity of JNPT to 2.4 million TEU. The project will be finished by Dec 2022.
Infrastructure Development SEZ Phase-I
Under the Port-led Industrialization Plan, JNPT initiates a Special Economic Zone(SEZ) project on 277 hectares of land with an INR 500 Cr. investment. This is located just 5km from JNPT and will connect the cargo terminal with state highways. The main objective of the special economic zone(SEZ) is to develop automobile, electrical, electronic, engineering, food processing, and pharma industries.
In JNPT SEZ, interested developers can lease land for up to 60 years and will also receive benefits like duty exemption, tax exemptions, Zero GST, etc. Moreover, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) is going to be a part of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor(DFC). Which will connect National Capital Delhi and Mumbai.
